Lisa Simone is her own woman: a chanteuse whose ability to transcend genres echoes the tradition of her mother – musical icon and pioneer Nina Simone. Blessed with a rich vocal range, an innate skill for lyrical interpretation and a soul-deep understanding of music as a means of healing, empowerment and celebration, Lisa will perform at Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival on Saturday, March 19th.
Do you remember the first record you bought?
I think it was The Commodores.
When and where were you happiest?
Right now, in the present, living in France.
What do you most value in your friends?
Authenticity.
We live in a time of huge change and civil unrest; do you believe music can play a role in uniting people?
Absolutely! Music reaches hearts and souls. It has no bounds; it is universal.
Which song or piece of music gets you through the tough times?
Good ole gospel music always lifts my spirit. It takes me back to my roots every time.
How would you define your music?
I don’t. I prefer to call it soul music, meaning music for the soul.
Where would you like to be in five years time?
On a beach in the South Pacific…mastering the art of doing nothing.
