Soweto Kinch

Multi-Award winning saxophonist and MC, Kinch has made huge impression in both the jazz and hip-hop community. He has amassed an impressive list of accolades and awards on both sides of the Atlantic – including a Mercury Music Prize nomination, two UMA Awards and two MOBO awards for best Jazz Act

His skills as a hip-hop MC and producer have also garnered him recognition in the urban music world: having supported the likes of KRS ONE, Dwele and TY, and being championed by the likes of Mos Def, Rodney P and BBC 1-Xtra’s Twin B.

‘Nonagram’ Kinch’s latest album project is an exploration of maths, geometry and sound which in his words, ‘injects a musical antidote, inspiring us to see new visions of the surrounding world.’

Nonagram revolves around the concept of a nine-sided wheel: at each point along it exploring the varied features of numbers or shapes. Through shifting time signatures, harmony and tonality the music explores incorporeal ideas of mathematics. Moreover, in an age of increasing political division, how these principles can unite or heal humanity. Taking broad inspiration from bird song to cymatic patterns, to the Egyptian Ennead and Platonic shapes this album will feel like a journey through a hidden world of abstraction. Lead by a propulsive rhythm section of bass and drums, the music blends jazz and hip hop in unexpected ways.

“Kinch has hitched jazz finesse to some grittily streetwise spoken narratives.” (The Guardian)
