Trumpeter Tomasso was first spotted as a rare talent by none other that Louis Armstrong in the late 60’s and today leads all-star swinging mainstream group consisting of such luminaries as Roy Williams, trombone, Julian Stringle, clarinet and sax, Dave Green, bass and David Newton, piano.
Jazz Down The Middle presents these outstanding musicians playing a combination of popular and lesser known tunes from the great songwriters and jazz repertoire with fresh arrangements in a varied program purveying some of the best improvisation you will hear on the jazz scene today. The three front line of jazz trumpet ace Enrico Tomasso, the exquisite Julian Marc Stringle and the legendary trombone stylist Roy Williams all have tremendous experience, carry many accolades and awards between them and are known for their great feeling for the music. Joining them will be the magnificent festival ‘House’ rhythm section of Dave Newton, Andy Crowdy and Julie Saury.
Enrico is a top trumpeter on the jazz scene and 4 times British Jazz Awards Winner. He plays the top festivals and jazz clubs around Europe and is often in the studio’s when a period jazz style is required. He met and was mentored by Louis Armstrong as a child and met and played with many more of the ‘Jazz Maestros’ on his journey.
Julian Marc Stringle
Julian, a child prodigy ‘Dixieland’ clarinettist who made his TV debut with Acker Bilk at 14, still gets excited to ‘return to his roots’ especially when performing with the outstanding jazz trumpet ace Enrico Tomasso & the legendary trombone stylist Roy Williams. Julian was regarded by Sir John Dankworth as “An immense talent and the best clarinettist to emerge in British Jazz in decades”. Current projects include the ‘Dream Band’ and touring annually with Ken Peplowski in the ‘Clarinet Maestros show’.
Roy Williams began his career during the trad jazz boom of the ’50’s. His primary influences were Urbie Green and Jack Teagarden. He made a name as the regular trombonist with the Alex Welsh Band from 1965 to 1978 and then 4 years with Humphrey Lyttelton after which he went freelance, playing with Bobby Rosengarden at New York’s Rainbow Room and touring Europe and America with The Worlds Greatest Jazz Band and Peanuts Hucko whilst collecting countless awards and international accolades.
